The short answer
Ask the rental desk which payment methods the planned route accepts and whether the exact vehicle has an electronic tag. Keep toll receipts and check the agreement for toll notices, administration charges and traffic violations. Budget tolls separately from fuel, the rental total and any deposit.
Identify the motorway before you drive
Do not build the trip from a static list. Preview the route while stopped and record:
- Road and operator — identify every tolled road or connector proposed by the current navigation route.
- Entry and exit — tolls can differ when the origin, destination or interchange changes.
- Vehicle class — confirm the class shown for the exact rental vehicle, not a generic car assumption.

- Easy Pass (electronic)
- Requires a linked in-car tag. Ask whether the exact car has one, whether it is funded and how charges are reconciled.
- M-FLOW / open tolling

- Wrong lane
- Backing up at booths is dangerous and illegal; follow signage early.
Ask at pickup: “Does this car have a toll tag, which system is it for, and how are charges settled?” If it does not, check the road operator’s currently accepted payment methods instead of assuming every lane accepts cash.

When a car includes Easy Pass:
- Confirm balance at pickup.
- Ask how to replenish if the trip exceeds account value.
- Photograph the tag number on the windscreen.
- Return the supplied tag as agreed. If it is missing or damaged, request the relevant contract term and itemised basis for any proposed charge.

Red flags at toll plazas
No accepted payment method — verify the route’s current options and carry a suitable backup before merging.
Wrong toll lane — do not reverse or cross barriers. Stop as directed by the signal or attendant and follow the operator’s instructions; do not assume you can drive through.
Missed exit — continue to the next permitted route option when safe; do not reverse or make an unsafe turn.
