Koh Chang day trip by rental car from Pattaya

Koh Chang is not a casual Beach Road spin — it is a long haul to Trat province, optional ferry logistics, and a rental contract that may not allow the trip at all. Plan territory, fuel and time before you book the car.

In short

Pattaya to the Koh Chang ferry pier (Laem Ngop) is roughly 250–280 km and 4–5 hours one way (last verified May 2026). True same-day Koh Chang visits are unrealistic; most renters drive to Trat, stay overnight, or treat the coast as the destination. Confirm territory in read the contract and see Rayong day trip for shorter eastern options.

Koh Chang appears on Pinterest boards as a jungle island escape from Pattaya. In a rental car, the honest framing is different: you are signing up for one of the longest common drives Eastern Seaboard tourists attempt — hundreds of kilometres into Trat province, optional ferry queues, and a rental contract that may never have contemplated an island side trip. Treating Koh Chang as a Beach Road day trip ends in midnight returns, fuel disputes, and territory arguments at the desk.

This guide covers the Koh Chang day trip by rental car from Pattaya realistically: distance, routes, time budgets, ferry vs parking at Laem Ngop, contract territory, fuel, overnight extensions, and when Rayong or Koh Samet is the smarter eastern target. It complements Rayong day trip, driving a rental car, and how to read a rental contract.

The short answer

Confirm your rental allows Trat province, leave Pattaya before 06:00 if you insist on a single long day, budget 8–10 hours driving minimum for a Pattaya–pier–Pattaya loop without island time, and prefer an overnight near Laem Ngop or on Koh Chang with a formal extension. Same-day “see the island and back” is not practical for most visitors.

Distance and driving time

Last verified May 2026. Orientation only from Central Pattaya:

  • To Laem Ngop ferry pier (Trat) — roughly 250–280 km, 4–5 hours in good traffic.
  • Passenger ferry to Koh Chang — add 30–60 minutes queue plus 30–45 minutes crossing; schedules vary by operator and season.
  • Round trip Pattaya–pier–Pattaya without overnight — 8–10 hours driving alone.

Holiday weekends and Songkran can add hours. Check dates yourself; the editors do not publish live traffic.

Same-day fantasy vs realistic plans

Three planner tiers
Coast-only day trip
Drive toward Trat, stop at Rayong or Chanthaburi coast viewpoints, turn back before dark — feasible if started early.
Overnight Trat or Koh Chang
Park at Laem Ngop or extend rental properly; ferry as foot passenger; realistic island time.
True same-day Koh Chang
Not recommended: 10+ hours travel, zero margin for ferry delays or fatigue.

If you only have one day, Rayong or Bangkok fits the calendar better than Koh Chang.

Route options from Pattaya

Common routing patterns:

  • Sukhumvit Road (Route 3) — Toll-free, passes Rayong and Chanthaburi towns; slower, more trucks and lights.
  • Highway 7 + connectors — Faster segments; tolls apply — see motorway tolls.
  • Mixed out, scenic back — Motorway east, coastal road return if daylight allows.

Navigation: GPS and navigation. Wrong exits on Highway 7 cost time; plan exits before merging.

Rental contract territory

Koh Chang sits in Trat province. Many Pattaya contracts allow neighbouring provinces; some restrict hires to Chonburi only or charge inter-province fees. Before booking:

  • Read territory clauses in how to read a rental contract.
  • Ask explicitly: “Trat province and Laem Ngop pier — permitted?”
  • Confirm whether an overnight extension is required for multi-day trips.
Accident out of territory voids insurance on strict contracts. A Trat collision in a Chonburi-only hire is catastrophic — confirm in writing at pickup.

Licence, IDP and checkpoints

Long highway legs increase checkpoint exposure on Route 3 and motorway slips. Carry passport, home licence and International Driving Permit where your profile requires it — verify with official sources, last verified May 2026. Every driver declared: additional driver guide. See police checkpoints.

Fuel planning for a long eastern run

Fill at pickup if possible; top up in Rayong or Chanthaburi before remote stretches. A Pattaya–Trat–Pattaya loop in a compact car often consumes 25–35 litres total plus local driving — orientation only. Return with the agreed fuel level; shops charge punitive refuel fees. Detail: fuel and parking and rental fuel charges.

Ferry logistics: car vs foot passenger

Most tourists park at Laem Ngop and walk onto the passenger ferry. Vehicle ferries exist but add queue time, deck fees, and scratch risk on ramps. Rental contracts may forbid vehicle ferry use or require written permission. This guide covers driving to the coast; island vehicle logistics are a separate decision tree.

Photograph the parked car at Laem Ngop if you leave it overnight: position, surroundings, fuel gauge. Theft and scratch disputes follow fake damage patterns on return.

Overnight stays and rental extensions

Staying in Trat or on Koh Chang requires notifying the rental company before the due date. Verbal OK is insufficient on dispute-prone contracts. Process: extend a car rental. Hotel parking in Trat is usually straightforward; document where you left the keys and who held the passport copy if any.

Tolls and cash

Highway segments use toll booths; budget cash and keep receipts. Amounts change; orientation only. Full detail: motorway tolls in a Pattaya rental car.

Wet season and road risk

May–October storms flood low coastal sections and hill curves toward Trat. Do not drive through standing water; hydrolock ruins holidays. See car rental flood damage. Landslide delays happen on hill segments — check official road reports yourself before departure.

Insurance and breakdowns

Remote breakdowns east of Rayong mean long waits. Note the contract emergency number at pickup: car rental pickup checklist. Accident steps: car rental accident. CDW may exclude windscreen chips from highway gravel and tyre damage from potholes.

Scooter alternative

Scooter touring to Trat is rare among tourists — heat, distance and highway exposure on 125 cc bikes. See taking a rental scooter out of Pattaya and scooter day trips for shorter radii. Families and ferry gear favour cars.

Return day in Pattaya

Allow buffer before shop closing after a long drive back. Walk-around with pickup photos: return day guide. Late fees apply if you miss the slot after a delayed ferry. Wash excessive mud only if the contract demands it.

When to choose Koh Samet or Rayong instead

One calendar day only — Rayong or Ban Phe pier for Koh Samet is closer.

Chonburi-only contract — do not drive to Trat; rebook or negotiate territory.

First Thailand drive — build confidence on Rayong before 500 km days.

Monsoon forecast heavy — postpone; Trat roads do not forgive rushed trips.

Practical Koh Chang car checklist

  • Contract allows Trat province in writing
  • Departure before 06:00 if attempting long single day
  • Full fuel at start; top-up plan eastbound
  • Cash for tolls and ferry; receipts kept
  • Overnight extension booked if not returning same calendar day
  • Parking at pier photographed if leaving the car
  • Licence, IDP and all drivers declared
  • Grab or hotel fallback if fatigue hits on return leg
