International Driving Permit (IDP) for Thailand

An IDP is an official companion to a valid domestic licence, not a licence by itself. It is one recognised visitor route; relevant ASEAN licences form a separate branch under current Thai guidance.

Verified answer

For the IDP branch, carry the valid domestic licence and a valid permit issued by an authorised body under a road-traffic convention Thailand recognises. The permit must show the correct vehicle category and cannot expand the domestic licence. Current Thai guidance also recognises a separate branch for relevant ASEAN member-state licences, so “every visitor needs an IDP” is too broad.

An International Driving Permit standardises and translates information from a domestic licence. It is useful because an official can read the driver and category information in a recognised format. It has no independent force after the underlying licence expires, is suspended or lacks the required category.

Check the official Thai branch first

Use the Thai government visitor guidance and the Department of Land Transport’s foreign-vehicle portal, not an IDP seller’s marketing page. Current guidance distinguishes a Thai licence, relevant ASEAN licences and qualifying foreign licences used with a recognised IDP.

If an ASEAN licence branch applies, an IDP may not be the required route. If it does not apply, determine which recognised convention permit the issuing country can provide and Thailand accepts. The answer depends on the country and licence, so one global shopping link cannot answer it accurately.

Which convention permit?

IDPs exist under more than one international road-traffic convention, including 1949 and 1968 formats. Thailand’s current guidance references recognised convention permits, while individual countries are parties to different instruments and authorise different issuers. Ask the competent issuer in the domestic-licence country which permit it can issue for Thailand and confirm the current Thai recognition.

Do not buy a document merely because a website calls it an “international driving licence.” Check that the issuing body is authorised and that the permit number, issue date, validity and categories correspond to the original licence.

Motorcycle and car categories

A permit reproduces categories; it does not create them. A domestic car-only licence does not authorise a scooter or motorcycle in Thailand simply because an IDP booklet has been obtained. Confirm that the original licence and permit both show the relevant motorcycle entitlement.

Automatic transmission, small engine capacity or rental-shop terminology does not turn a scooter into a car category. Restrictions on the original licence may still matter. Verify any provisional, learner, engine-size or transmission restriction before travel.

Where and when to obtain it

Use the authorised issuer connected to the domestic licence, normally before leaving the issuing country. Requirements, fees and processing vary by country. Do not assume a foreign visitor can have a valid permit newly issued in Thailand on the basis of an overseas licence.

Check the permit’s start and expiry dates against the full rental. The domestic licence must also remain valid. Keep both originals available while driving or riding, subject to current Thai document-carrying rules.

What the IDP does not prove

  • It does not prove a rental operator has suitable insurance.
  • It does not add a motorcycle category.
  • It does not override age, health, vehicle or licence restrictions.
  • It does not make an unauthorised online translation valid.
  • It does not guarantee that a private travel insurer will accept a claim.

Insurance needs a separate written check

Ask the rental operator and each insurer whether the exact documents, rider, vehicle category, engine size, helmet use and trip meet their terms. Compulsory victim protection, voluntary motor cover, a rental waiver and travel insurance are separate. Avoid the blanket claim that one document issue automatically voids every layer; read the policy wording.

A pre-travel verification record

  1. Save the current Thai government or DLT page used for the branch.
  2. Confirm whether the ASEAN or IDP branch applies to the licence.
  3. For an IDP, verify the authorised issuer and convention format.
  4. Check the domestic licence and permit dates and categories.
  5. Ask the insurer in writing about the exact planned vehicle.
  6. Carry the documents required by current Thai rules.
Conflicting advice? Use the Department of Land Transport or another competent Thai authority for the legal-document question, the authorised domestic issuer for the permit, and the insurer for coverage. A rental counter cannot settle all three.

Common questions

Is an IDP valid without my home licence?+
No. It accompanies the valid domestic licence it translates. Carry both and verify the current Thai requirements.
Does an ASEAN licence need an IDP?+
Current Thai guidance recognises a separate branch for relevant ASEAN licences. Verify that the issuing state, licence status and vehicle category fall within that branch.
Can an IDP add motorcycle entitlement?+
No. It cannot add a category missing from the underlying domestic licence.
