Car rental day trip to Rayong from Pattaya

Rayong’s beaches and seafood towns are an easy half-day from Pattaya — if your rental contract allows the trip, you know the tolls, and you return with the same fuel and photos you started with.

In short

Rayong is roughly 60–90 km east via Sukhumvit Road or Highway 7 (last verified May 2026). Confirm your rental allows inter-province use, carry licence and IDP, budget tolls and fuel, and avoid driving tired after seafood and beer. See driving a rental car and Bangkok day trip for similar planning.

Rayong province sits east of Pattaya — seafood towns, quieter beaches, Mae Ramphueng coast strips and an industrial port city that tourists mostly drive through on the way to sand and grilled prawns. In a rental car from Pattaya, Rayong is a natural day trip: long enough to feel like an escape, short enough to return the same evening if you start early. It is also long enough to go wrong if your contract forbids leaving Chonburi, you miss the fuel level on return, or you drive flooded coastal roads in wet season.

This guide covers routes, timing, tolls, fuel, territory clauses, parking at beaches, and return-day discipline. It complements driving a rental car in Pattaya, Bangkok day trip by rental car, and fuel and parking.

The short answer

Leave Pattaya before 09:00, confirm your rental agreement allows Rayong, take Sukhumvit Road if you want toll-free scenery or Highway 7 if you want speed, budget 1–1.5 hours each way plus stops, fill fuel before return to the agreed level, and photograph the car at pickup and before hand-back. Do not drink and drive after a seafood lunch; split drivers or stay overnight.

Distance and driving time

Last verified May 2026. Approximate figures from Central Pattaya:

  • To Rayong city centre — 60–70 km, 1–1.25 hours off-peak.
  • To Mae Ramphueng / Ban Phe coast — 70–90 km, add 15–30 minutes on local roads.
  • To Koh Samet pier (Ban Phe) — popular parking-and-ferry stop; arrive early for parking in high season.

Weekend traffic toward the coast builds from late morning. Songkran and public holidays add hours; check dates yourself.

Route choice: Sukhumvit vs Highway 7

Two main options
Route 3 (Sukhumvit Road)
Toll-free, urban and town stretches through Chonburi and Rayong; slower, more U-turns and trucks. Easier to stop for food.
Highway 7 (Motorway)
Faster eastbound link; toll booths; exit toward Rayong city or coast connectors. Less scenic, better for time.
Combined loop
Out via motorway, back via coast road or Sukhumvit — plan fuel and daylight.

Navigation apps work but verify exits; wrong turns add toll U-turns or illegal shortcuts. For general Thai driving habits — lane discipline, tailgating, motorcycle filtering — read driving a rental car before a long day.

Rental contract territory

Not every Pattaya rental car may leave the district. Before booking:

  • Read territory clauses in how to read a rental contract.
  • Ask explicitly: “Rayong province for one day — OK?”
  • International desks often print allowed provinces; local shops may rely on verbal OK until an accident.
  • Some policies charge inter-province fees or require notification.
Accident out of territory can void insurance if the contract forbids the trip. A Rayong collision in an “Chonburi only” hire is a financial catastrophe — confirm in writing.

Licence, IDP and checkpoints

Police checkpoints occur on Sukhumvit and highway slips. Carry passport, home licence and International Driving Permit where your profile requires it — verify with official sources, last verified May 2026. See police checkpoints and rentals. Every driver must be declared; see additional driver guide.

Tolls and cash

Highway 7 uses electronic tolling and cash lanes at some booths; keep small baht notes. Amounts change; budget roughly 100–200 baht round trip as orientation only. Receipts help if the rental company queries mileage or route.

Fuel planning

Pick up the car with a full tank if possible; top up near Rayong before returning to Pattaya if you consumed half a tank on the coast loop. Shops charge punitive refuel fees. Detail: fuel and parking and rental fuel charges.

Small B-segment rentals often use 91 or 95 octane; confirm at pickup. A Rayong day trip plus local coast driving typically burns 8–12 litres round trip in a compact car — orientation only, not a quote.

Where to go in Rayong on a day trip

Popular renter stops (verify opening hours yourself):

  • Mae Ramphueng Beach — long sand strip, seafood restaurants.
  • Ban Phe — ferry pier to Koh Samet; parking fills on weekends.
  • Khao Laem Ya–Mu Ko Samet National Park — viewpoints; park fees apply.
  • Rayong city — transit point; less tourist focus unless you need services.

This guide does not review attractions — only the rental logistics of getting there and back.

Parking and beach stops

Coastal car parks are mostly pay-and-display or restaurant parking with purchase. Avoid blocking fishery lanes or soft sand pull-offs that trap front-wheel-drive rentals. Photograph parking position if tight — scrape disputes on return follow fake damage scam patterns.

Wet season and flood risk

May–October storms flood low coastal sections and Sukhumvit dips. Do not drive through standing water; hydrolock voids holidays. See car rental flood damage. If rain is heavy, postpone the trip — Rayong will still exist tomorrow.

Insurance and breakdowns

Desk-sold CDW may exclude windscreen chips on highway gravel, tyre punctures, or off-pavement parking misjudgments. Note emergency number on the contract. For accident steps: car rental accident. Travel insurance overlap: travel insurance and car rental.

Return day in Pattaya

Allow buffer before shop closing time. Wash excessive salt and sand only if the contract requires it — some shops overcharge cleaning. Walk-around with pickup photos: car rental pickup checklist and return day guide. Late return fees apply if you miss the slot after a long seafood lunch.

Overnight extension

If you stay in Rayong overnight, notify the rental company before midnight on due date. Verbal OK is not enough on dispute-prone contracts — extend a car rental properly. Parking the car overnight at a Rayong hotel is usually fine; theft risk is lower than central Pattaya but not zero.

Scooter vs car for Rayong

Scooter day trips to Rayong happen but highway legs are uncomfortable and hot on 125 cc bikes. See taking a rental scooter out of Pattaya and scooter day trips. For families and ferry gear, a rental car is the sensible default.
