Koh Samet day trip — rental car from Pattaya
You do not drive onto Koh Samet. The rental car gets you to Ban Phe pier; the island is passenger ferry only. Plan parking, contract territory and return time before you leave Pattaya.
Rent a car in Pattaya, drive to Ban Phe pier in Rayong, park in a paid mainland lot, and take the passenger ferry to Koh Samet. You do not drive on the island. Confirm Rayong is allowed on the contract, budget fuel and parking, and plan return time before the agency closes.
Koh Samet is the island escape many Pattaya visitors want for a beach day or one night away. A rental car solves the mainland leg — Sukhumvit or Rayong-bound highways to Ban Phe — but the car stops at the pier. National-park island rules and ferry operations mean tourists cross by passenger boat and rent a songthaew or walk on Samet, not drive a Pattaya hire car onto the sand.
This guide covers Koh Samet day trips by rental car from Pattaya — drive timing, Ban Phe parking, ferry logistics, and contract territory. For nearby mainland beaches without a ferry, see Ban Amphur day trip. For daily hire costs, see car rental prices and fuel and parking. Editorial information only — ferry schedules change; verify with operators as of June 2026.
Drive from Pattaya to Ban Phe pier
From central Pattaya, orientation timing is roughly 1.5–2 hours to Ban Phe in light traffic — longer on holiday weekends when Rayong-bound traffic stacks. Leave early if you want a same-day round trip: you need margin for parking, ticket purchase, ferry wait, island transfer, and the return drive before your rental agency’s closing window.
Navigation targets Ban Phe pier (Na Dan pier area), not random Rayong city centre. Fuel up before you leave Pattaya if your contract returns the car with the same level; highway fuel stations exist but queues happen on Sunday returns. See driving a rental car for checkpoint and licence reminders.
Parking at Ban Phe — car stays on the mainland
Paid parking lots operate near the ferry piers. Take the ticket, photograph the row or bay where you left the car, and note the lot name on your phone. Do not leave passports, laptops, or bags visible — parked-car theft and window damage can still trigger excess charges under your rental agreement. Read fuel and parking for general parking habits and car rental insurance for what may be excluded while unattended.
You are not driving on Koh Samet. Vehicle ferries are not the normal tourist route; assume the hire car remains on the mainland for the entire island visit.
Ferry and island transport
Passenger ferries and speedboats run from Ban Phe to Koh Samet piers such as Na Dan and Ao Wong Duea depending on operator and season. Schedules tighten in rough weather; last boats back are the constraint on a day trip. Buy tickets from official counters at the pier when possible rather than informal touts if you are unsure.
On the island you walk, use songthaews, or rent a small bike from island operators — separate from your Pattaya car contract. Park fees, ferry fares, and island transfers are out-of-pocket on top of daily car hire.
Contract territory and return time
Before you book, confirm the rental agreement allows Rayong province and mainland trips outside Chonburi. Some Pattaya agencies include Rayong; others charge out-of-area fees or treat border crossings as a violation. Read territory lines and mileage caps at pickup. See read the contract.
Agree return time with the desk. Late return fees apply even when ferries delay you. If same-day feels tight, stay overnight in Rayong or on Samet and return the car the next morning — many renters prefer that to rushing the last boat. Compare with Rayong day trip planning.
Pickup video and return day
Car rental scams in Pattaya focus less on ferries than on return-day scratch claims, but the defence is the same: walk-around video at pickup, note fuel level, and photograph existing panel marks. After Koh Samet, rinse sandy feet before you drive; interior sand is not a major issue but exterior damage claims still need your evidence. See scratch damage and the scam guide hub.
Compare costs before you book
Daily hire, fuel, parking, and ferry tickets add up. Price the full day before you commit.
