Family transport in Pattaya: scooter, two bikes or car?

A family transport decision starts with the people and journeys, not with the cheapest available vehicle. Count every adult, child, suitcase and regular trip, then compare a suitable car, taxi or other local transport with separate scooters for eligible adult riders. Do not assume one fleet scooter can safely or contractually carry the whole group.

The publication’s recommendation for children

For a Pattaya trip with children, use a suitable rental car with the required restraints, a taxi or other local transport. This is an editorial safety recommendation, not a statement that the publication has established every legal scenario.

Thailand’s amended Road Traffic Act and the Royal Thai Police child-restraint rules cover young passengers in cars. The government’s Public Relations Department summary says a child aged no more than six needs a child safety seat or booster meeting the stated standard, with specified alternative protection steps where no seat is available; it also describes a public-transport exception. Do not place a child on a footwell, squeeze extra passengers onto a seat or use an adult helmet that does not fit. The provider’s silence or supply of a helmet is not proof that the arrangement is lawful, suitable or insured.

A published rental-car example is not a fit check

Best Motors stated on 23 August 2026 that one child seat was available free with a car booking when the child’s age and weight were supplied. This is one operator’s current statement, not a Pattaya-wide inclusion and not independent verification that a particular restraint fits your child or the assigned car.

Before paying, request the restraint type, standard label, child-size range, vehicle compatibility, installation responsibility and availability for your exact dates in writing. Inspect it at handover. If the provider cannot identify the equipment or confirm the booking, arrange an appropriate alternative rather than assuming “child seat available” resolves the requirement.

Two-up rules for adults on rental scooters

If an adult carries an adult passenger, confirm that the provider and contract permit it, the rider’s licence and recognised permit cover the motorcycle, both people have correctly fitting helmets, and the exact bike is suitable within its stated limits.

Passengers must not steer, must not stand on footrests, and must not carry a second child on their lap. If that sounds like the scene outside your condo, the answer is a second bike or a car — not tighter squeezing.

Car versus two scooters — what fits your family

Two scooters: This can work for two confident, properly licensed adults with light luggage and no children on the bikes. Licences, teens and who may sign the contract

Do not infer a teenager’s eligibility from a provider’s willingness to accept a parent’s signature. The provider’s age rule, Thai legal requirements, the motorcycle category on the rider’s licence and recognised permit, and insurance conditions are separate checks. Check who the contract names as the hirer and every authorised rider. Disclose another family member who may ride, and obtain the provider’s answer in writing; do not assume one signature covers everyone.

If any requirement is uncertain, choose a car, taxi or other local transport instead.

Pickup day with multiple bikes or mixed transport

Allow enough time and light to complete the document and condition checks for each vehicle, without imposing a fixed duration on every group. Work through these steps:

1. Ask which exact bikes are available and whether each rider can comfortably control the assigned model.
2. Review the contract structure; photograph each plate, odometer, tyres and keys before riding.
3. Match helmet sizes per rider; pillions need their own, not shared loose straps.
4. Keep identity copies in secure storage accessible only to those who need them. Share the operator and emergency contacts with the group without distributing unnecessary passport data.
5. Confirm parking rules with the accommodation for every vehicle.
