Second helmet for a rental scooter passenger in Pattaya

Two-up riding without a passenger helmet is an invitation to a checkpoint fine and a hospital bill. Many shops hand over one helmet and assume you will not ask for a second.

In short

Say “two helmets” at pickup before you pay. Thai traffic law expects both rider and passenger to wear a properly strapped helmet — checkpoints on Beach Road and Sukhumvit fine two-up bikes where only the driver has a lid. Rental helmets are often thin but acceptable for short hops if the strap works; buy a spare locally if the shop only has one.

Couples, friends and families riding one rental scooter is normal in Pattaya — Jomtien beach runs, night-market loops, immigration trips with a partner on the back. What is not normal, but very common, is a shop handing over a single helmet and waving you off. The passenger sits bare-headed or shares a loose lid that does not fit, and the first checkpoint on Sukhumvit or Beach Road turns that into a cash fine for the driver.

This guide covers passenger helmets on rental scooters in Pattaya — what to ask for at pickup, quality checks, checkpoint risk, and when to buy your own spare. Pair it with two-up riding, helmet law and checkpoints, no helmet provided, and first-time rental. Editorial information only — verify helmet rules and fines with official sources as of June 2026.

What the law expects for passengers

Thai traffic law requires motorcycle riders and passengers to wear helmets. That applies to rental scooters the same as owned bikes. Enforcement in Pattaya is visible and routine — police checkpoints on main arteries stop two-up scooters specifically because the passenger is easy to spot without a lid. Fines are paid on the spot in baht; amounts change and should be verified with official sources.

A visa type, tourist status, or “just going round the corner” does not exempt the passenger. The driver is usually the one who pays if the pillion has no helmet, even when the passenger is a Thai national or a child. See helmet fines and checkpoint guide.

Ask for two helmets before you pay

State clearly at the counter: “Two people, two helmets.” Do this before deposit and contract signing, not after you have walked the bike to the soi. Many Pattaya rental desks keep a pile of helmets behind the counter; the default handover is one per bike because most solo tourists never ask. If staff say only one is available, decide then whether to walk to the next shop or buy a spare before you ride.

Include both helmets in your pickup video — condition, strap, size label if visible. That protects you on return day if a shop later claims you lost the second helmet. See pickup day playbook and photographing the bike.

Quality, fit and strap checks

Rental helmets in Pattaya are typically thin shell, basic padding, sun-faded. They are not DOT or ECE certified in any way you can verify. For a ten-minute hop to 7-Eleven they are usually adequate if the chin strap clicks and stays tight. For a week of two-up riding, the passenger deserves a helmet that does not slide when they turn their head.

At pickup: shake your head with the strap done up — the helmet should not rotate freely. Check the buckle is not cracked. Smell the liner; mouldy padding is common on fleet helmets. If the passenger helmet is visibly worse than the rider’s, ask for a swap from the pile or a different bike.

No helmet is not a bargaining chip. A shop that refuses a second helmet or rents without any lid is telling you how they treat fleet safety. Consider a different counter — and read shop red flags.

Checkpoints and fines in Pattaya

Checkpoint locations shift, but Beach Road, Second Road, Sukhumvit and routes toward immigration and Big C see regular stops. Officers look for helmet, licence documents, and sometimes bike registration. A passenger without a helmet is a quick fine — no negotiation, no “we are tourists.” Keep both helmets on even for short distances; checkpoints appear on routes you ride daily.

If you are stopped, stay calm, show documents, pay the fine if issued, and keep the receipt. Do not assume the rental shop will reimburse checkpoint fines unless the contract says so in writing — most do not. See traffic fines on rental scooters.

When to buy your own passenger helmet

If the shop has only one helmet, or the spare is clearly unsafe, buy a basic helmet locally. Convenience stores, Big C, Tesco Lotus and motorbike accessory shops along Sukhumvit and in Jomtien stock budget helmets from roughly 300–800 baht depending on model and season. Last verified June 2026; prices change without notice. That is still cheaper than repeated checkpoint fines or an emergency-room bill after a low-speed fall.

For longer two-up rentals — weekly or monthly with a partner — a purchased passenger helmet you keep at the condo is often more comfortable than rotating through a shop’s fleet. Label it; do not leave it on the bike unless you accept theft risk. See renting for family and riding a rental scooter.

Tip: If you return the rental helmet but keep your purchased passenger lid, note that on the contract or tell the desk — avoids a dispute over “missing helmet” on return day.

Common questions

Do rental shops provide a second helmet in Pattaya?
They should for two-up rentals, but many default to one unless you ask. Say “two helmets” before you pay and inspect fit and strap before you leave. Last verified June 2026.
Is a passenger helmet legally required in Thailand?
Yes under Thai traffic law for motorcycle passengers. Pattaya checkpoints routinely enforce this on rental scooters. Verify current rules with official sources.
Can you buy a cheap second helmet in Pattaya?
Yes at convenience stores and bike accessory shops if the rental counter only has one. A basic helmet typically costs less than a checkpoint fine.
Who gets fined if the passenger has no helmet?
Both can be stopped. The driver usually pays the on-the-spot fine in baht. Do not ride two-up until the passenger has a strapped helmet.
