Thai child-restraint rules apply in rental cars. Seat availability, category, condition and fit are operator-specific, so obtain written confirmation for the exact booking and verify the exact vehicle at pickup.

What the official Thai summary says
The Thai Public Relations Department summary, checked 23 August 2026, states that a child aged six or younger must use a child safety seat, special child seat or another method to protect against danger in an accident. It also states that a passenger 135 cm or shorter must use a seat belt or another accident-protection method, regardless of seating row. Product and implementation details are subject to Royal Thai Police rules.
This wording should not be replaced with foreign age-stage rules or an assumed Thai requirement for a particular rear-facing, forward-facing or booster product. Follow the current Thai rules plus the child-restraint and vehicle manufacturers’ instructions. Obtain professional help if you cannot confirm compatibility or installation.
Ask the operator before booking
Request written answers for the exact branch, booking and vehicle rather than a general “child seat available” message. Confirm:
- the restraint category, stated child size range and model;
- the fee, deposit and cancellation terms;
- whether the same unit is reserved for your booking;
- condition, cleanliness and whether the manual is supplied;
- who is responsible for checking compatibility and installation;
- the exact vehicle, seating position, belt system or anchor type;
- what happens if the promised seat or compatible vehicle is unavailable.
A dated starting point is the Pattaya Rent a Car record: its operator FAQ, checked 7 September 2026, offers child seats for an unspecified daily fee. That statement does not establish your required category, a reserved unit or compatibility. Ask for all three before relying on it.

At pickup, add the actual car registration, restraint label/model, supplied parts and any condition issue. Match those to the reply and both manuals before accepting the setup.
Verify the exact vehicle, not just the class
“Sedan,” “SUV” or “seven-seater” does not establish anchor availability, belt geometry, seating layout or luggage space. Rental classes can contain multiple makes and models. Do not infer ISOFIX or another anchor system from brand, age, price or vehicle size. Ask for the exact model and verify the delivered vehicle and manual.
If more than one restraint is needed, check each seating position separately. Confirm that the driver and other passengers can travel safely and that required luggage does not force an unsafe seating arrangement. A larger vehicle may help with space, but it does not prove compatibility.
If you bring your own restraint
Check airline carriage rules separately from road-use suitability. Acceptance on an aircraft does not establish that a product is lawful, suitable or compatible in a Thai rental car. Keep the restraint manual and identify any damage from transport before installation.
Do not rely on an unfamiliar certification mark as proof of current Thai approval without checking an authoritative Thai source. Follow the restraint and vehicle manuals together. If the instructions conflict, the restraint is damaged, the belt or anchor is unsuitable, or installation cannot be confirmed, do not drive with the child in that setup.
At pickup
- Match the delivered vehicle and restraint to the written booking.
- Inspect the restraint for visible damage, missing parts, unreadable labels and an unavailable manual.
- Confirm the intended seating position and vehicle restraint system.
- Install only according to both manufacturers’ instructions.
- Resolve fit or condition concerns before accepting the vehicle.
- Record the supplied equipment and any existing interior marks on the condition form.
Contract and insurance questions
Responsibility for installation, vehicle-interior damage, replacement equipment and insurance consequences depends on the signed rental contract and each policy. Ask for those terms in writing. Do not assume that operator supply transfers responsibility, that self-installation removes coverage, or that a collision waiver covers the restraint or child.
Ask the motor insurer and travel insurer what documentation and compliance each requires. “Insurance included” is not an answer to a child-restraint question. Keep the written booking, restraint details and relevant policy response with the rental records.
If the promised seat is unavailable
Do not improvise a restraint or carry a child in a setup you cannot verify. Ask for the written alternative or cancellation remedy in the booking terms. A different vehicle may still be incompatible. It can be safer to pause the rental and arrange suitable transport than to leave the counter with an unverified setup.
