Baht-only deposit for scooter rental in Pattaya

Thailand’s OCPB says prescribed vehicle-rental contracts should state payment and security terms. See its official explanation and renter guidance. Currency-specific operator practice remains local and changeable.

The short answer

Withdraw or exchange baht before pickup. Write deposit amount on the contract in baht. Film the note stack on return and count before you leave the counter.

Why one stated currency is clearer

A baht-denominated agreement avoids having to reconstruct an exchange rate at return. If another currency is offered, write the amount in that currency, the agreed baht reference, the conversion basis and the refund currency before paying. Do not assume an operator’s conversion is better or worse without comparing the stated figures. See the USD deposit guide.

How much cash to carry

There is no official Pattaya-wide total for deposit plus rental. Ask for the rental price and security amount as separate line items, then compare like-for-like written quotes. See high deposit and price guide.

ATMs and exchange before pickup

If you need baht, check the ATM or exchange provider’s displayed rate, local fee, home-bank fee and withdrawal limit before confirming. Decline a transaction whose total is unclear. Keep the receipt separately from the rental receipt; neither document replaces the signed deposit term.

Counting on return

Count the notes with the operator and record the amount returned. A video can preserve the count but does not prove every contract term. See return day and get deposit back.

Card hold vs baht cash

An operator may offer cash, a card transaction or a transfer. This publication has no reliable Pattaya-wide method split. For any non-cash option, identify whether funds are charged or only authorised and state the reversal or refund method. See the card deposit guide.

Small notes vs large notes at pickup

Record the total amount, not an assumed preferred denomination. Count the notes in view of the operator and have the receipt show the same total. If change is involved, complete the count before signing. At return, the contract normally concerns the agreed amount and currency rather than the serial numbers of particular notes unless the document expressly says otherwise.

PromptPay and bank transfer at return

If a PromptPay or bank-transfer refund is offered, write that method into the contract and verify receipt in your own bank record. A sender screenshot alone is not proof that funds reached you. See get deposit back and the PromptPay refund guide.

Compare the complete written offer

Compare rental price, security amount, currency, payment method, deduction basis and refund process together. A lower daily price does not make an unclear deposit safer. A currency mismatch creates an avoidable evidence problem. If the contract says baht but the operator accepts foreign notes, have the receipt record exactly what was received and what must be returned.

Count the refund before leaving

Keep the return in view, count the amount and ask for any deduction in writing. Recording can preserve what happened but should not obstruct staff or other customers. If the returned amount differs from the signed term, save the evidence and use the charge-dispute steps.

A foreign currency is not automatically unsafe and baht is not automatically dispute-free. The protective step is agreement between the contract, receipt, transaction record and actual refund.
