How to compare a high deposit

Compare like for like and require the result in writing:

• Same model, dates and use — two or more current operator quotes.
• Exact security purpose — what events permit a deduction.
• Liability wording — do not assume the deposit is either a cap or an automatic forfeiture.
• Refund process — method, timing and evidence for any deduction.

When a high deposit is a red flag

The amount becomes harder to justify when the contract and evidence are weak. Warning signals include:

• Blank or refused damage diagram — contract red flags.
• Physical passport held — passport hostage.
• Verbal “unlimited damage” with no cap figure.
• Pressure to pay by PromptPay before you see the bike — PromptPay scam.
• Deposit stays high after staff swap you to a smaller bike — wrong model.

Compare before you pay

Compare as many current written offers as practical for the same model, dates and use without assuming nearby supply. Evaluate the exact security purpose, deduction evidence and refund method rather than drawing an operator-quality conclusion from desk behaviour. See choosing a shop and negotiating price.

Documenting a high deposit you already paid

Separate the security amount from the maximum amount an operator may later claim. They are not automatically the same. Before paying, ask the operator to point to the clauses answering four questions: what the deposit secures; whether it limits any wider liability; what evidence is required for a deduction; and when and how the balance is returned. Photograph the answers with the rest of the signed contract.

If the operator says the amount reflects a newer or more valuable model, record the exact registration or fleet identifier and compare the bike delivered with the contract. If the model changes, ask the operator to re-confirm the security amount and terms in writing before accepting it. OCPB’s controlled-contract guidance supports making the vehicle and security details explicit, but it does not decide whether a particular quoted amount is commercially reasonable.

If you accepted a higher deposit, retain the signed terms, payment evidence and pickup condition record. At return, document the inspection and preserve proof appropriate to the refund method.
