Rental car side mirror damage in Pattaya: what to do

Stop safely, record the mirror and any contact scene, notify the operator, and do not continue with loose glass, exposed wiring or seriously reduced rearward view without instructions.

In short

Film both mirrors at pickup, including the glass, cap, hinge and door mount. After a clip, preserve the scene and notify the operator under the contract. A mirror charge should identify the damaged component and repair scope; no citywide price or automatic CDW outcome can be inferred.

“Mirror damage” can mean a surface mark on the cap, broken glass, a loose housing, failed folding motor, damaged indicator or camera, exposed wiring, or damage at the door mount. Those are different scopes. This publication has not inspected your car and cannot diagnose the part or decide liability from a photograph.

Use this guide with the car pickup checklist, scratch damage guide and return-day checklist.

Pickup documentation for both mirrors

Include both mirrors in the original dated walk-around video: glass, cap, lower edge, hinge and the door area around the mount. Record existing marks close up and in context. Test manual or powered folding only as the operator instructs; do not force a stiff mechanism.

1

Walk both sides slowly

Capture driver and passenger mirrors from front and rear angles, with the registration visible elsewhere in the same original file.

2

Check fitted functions

With staff, check adjustment, folding, indicators, heaters or cameras only if the vehicle has them. Record any fault before departure.

3

Log scuffs on the contract

Point out anything visible before you sign. A tick on the damage diagram beats arguing from memory a week later.

4

Keep original files

Retain the signed handover, pickup and return files until the deposit or card hold is fully resolved.

After a mirror strike

  1. Stop in a safe place. If another vehicle, person or property was involved, preserve their details and use the accident sequence.
  2. Photograph the whole side of the car, the mirror from several angles, any debris and the contact point or scene.
  3. Do not push a powered mirror, tape exposed wiring, glue the housing or order a part without written operator approval.
  4. Notify the operator using the method and deadline in the agreement, and keep the response.

If glass is loose, the assembly may detach, wiring is exposed, or the remaining view is materially reduced, park and ask whether the vehicle should be driven or recovered. Do not let a return deadline override immediate safety.

Do not assume the scope. Door or calibration work may be justified only if the operator documents related damage or fitted equipment. Ask for the causal link and each line item instead of accepting or rejecting a category by name.

How to assess a mirror charge

There is no verified citywide replacement price. Cost varies by model and variant, glass and cap type, motor, indicator, camera or sensor equipment, door-mount damage, parts source, labour and any required calibration.

Ask for the exact component, part number if available, repair or replacement reason, separate parts/labour/tax, the contract clause used and the marked-up damage photo. If calibration or door work is claimed, ask what fitted system or physical damage requires it. A comparable independent written estimate may help, but must match the same model, variant and scope.

CDW or another waiver does not have a universal treatment for mirrors. Check the actual document for glass, accessories, electronics, reporting and authorised-driver terms. See the CDW guide and excess guide.

Contract and complaint record

Thailand’s OCPB says prescribed vehicle-rental contracts have applied since 30 December 2025. Its official explanation and April 2026 renter guidance are the primary references used here.

At return, compare the same mirror in the pickup and return files. Do not sign a blank or inaccurate damage line. Ask for the contractual basis and amount in writing, then follow the dispute guide. For an unresolved consumer-contract complaint, use OCPB’s portal or hotline 1166. Tourist Police 1155 can assist tourists or help with translation; it does not price a repair.

Before you drive away

Run the car pickup checklist

Mirrors are one line on a longer routine: contract, deposit hold, fuel policy, tyres, and a full video walk-around.

Common questions

Who pays for a broken car mirror in Pattaya?
That depends on the event, contract, condition record and any applicable waiver or insurance. A broken mirror alone does not establish who is liable.
How much is a fair mirror replacement?
No verified Pattaya-wide figure exists. Request the exact component and itemised scope for the same model and variant, then compare a genuinely equivalent written estimate if disputed.
Are side mirrors excluded from CDW?
Only the actual waiver can answer. Check glass, accessories and electronics exclusions plus reporting and driver conditions.
Can you keep driving with a damaged mirror?
Do not continue with loose glass, an unstable assembly, exposed wiring or seriously reduced view without operator instructions. Park safely and ask whether recovery or repair is required.
