Guide · Licence & age

How old do you have to be to rent a scooter in Pattaya?

The honest answer is: it varies by shop — and the licence rule cares more than the calendar.

In short

There is no single legal minimum age across all Pattaya rental shops. Most shops will rent to renters from 18; some set the bar at 21. The harder rule is the licence: any rider on a motorbike in Thailand needs a motorcycle licence, and tourists need an International Driving Permit on top — regardless of age.

The short answer

Most Pattaya scooter rental shops accept renters from 18, and a smaller number set their minimum at 21. The shop’s rule and the licence/IDP rule are separate — you must satisfy both.

What shops typically ask at the counter

The standard pickup involves a passport check for identity and age, a licence check for class, and the deposit and contract paperwork. A shop that takes your money without checking the licence is not protecting you — it is taking the risk that you will be stopped at a checkpoint.

Rental insurance, where it exists, can carry its own minimum-age clause that the shop may not flag. If the shop accepted you but the policy requires a higher age, the cover can be void on a claim. Read the contract.

The rule that matters more than your age

Thai law requires a motorcycle licence to ride any motorbike, whatever the engine size or the rider’s age. Tourists ride on a licence from home that covers motorcycles, together with an International Driving Permit (IDP) carrying the motorcycle category. As of May 2026 this is the standard position — rules change, so read the licence guide and the IDP guide, and verify with official sources.

If you are a younger renter

An 18-year-old will be turned away from some shops, accepted at others. Larger or faster bikes are often restricted to over-21s by the shop, the insurer, or both. A higher deposit is also common for younger riders. Ask in advance rather than at the counter with luggage in hand.

Big bikes and higher age bars

Automatic 110–160cc scooters are what most tourists rent. Larger manual or big-bike rentals — 300cc and up — often carry a 21+ or even 25+ shop minimum and stricter licence checks. See the big-bike rental guide if you are looking at something beyond a city scooter; age and licence rules tighten quickly.

Checkpoints: age is not what they stop you for

Pattaya police checkpoints as of May 2026 typically focus on helmet use, licence and IDP, and sometimes insurance paperwork — not your birth date on its own. That does not remove the shop’s right to refuse rental or void cover if you misrepresented your age. Read the helmet and checkpoints guide and verify enforcement with official sources; patterns change.

Related questions

What is the minimum age to rent a scooter in Pattaya?
There is no single national minimum. Most shops in Pattaya accept renters from 18; some require 21+, and a few set the bar higher for larger bikes. Whatever your age, Thai law requires a motorcycle licence and tourists need an International Driving Permit. Rules change, so verify with official sources.
Do you need to be 21 to rent a scooter in Thailand?
Not nationally. Many shops accept 18-year-old renters. A 21+ minimum is sometimes set by the shop, by the bike size, or by the insurance policy attached to the rental. Check with each shop.
Can a 17-year-old rent a scooter in Pattaya?
Most shops will not rent to anyone under 18, and Thai law sets driving-age minimums by vehicle class. A 17-year-old should expect to be refused at most rental counters.
What ID do Pattaya scooter shops check for age?
Passport is the usual proof of age and identity at tourist counters. Shops may also ask to see your motorcycle licence and International Driving Permit. A passport copy for the file is normal; keeping your physical passport as collateral is not.
