Can you rent a scooter without leaving your passport?

Yes — and you should. A fair Pattaya shop takes cash, not your passport, as security.

In short

You can rent a scooter in Pattaya without handing over your physical passport. Fair shops accept a cash deposit and may keep a passport copy for identity only. A shop that demands to hold your passport is a red flag — walk away.

The short answer

Yes. Multiple Pattaya scooter shops rent without keeping your passport. The standard arrangement at an honest counter is a cash deposit plus a passport copy for verification. Your physical passport stays in your possession for the entire rental period.

What fair shops accept instead

The editors’ field checks show two acceptable patterns at reputable counters:

  • Cash deposit only — typically 2,000–5,000 baht for a basic automatic scooter, held against damage or late return and refunded when you bring the bike back on time.
  • Passport copy plus cash deposit — the copy verifies your identity and age; the cash covers the shop’s risk. The copy stays on file; the passport itself does not.

Some shops also ask to see your driving licence and International Driving Permit at pickup. That is separate from the deposit question.

Never leave your physical passport with a rental shop. A shop that insists on keeping it is not running a standard rental — it is setting up a hostage situation. The passport-hostage scam guide documents exactly how this plays out at return.

Why this matters

Your passport is your identity document abroad. Without it, you cannot check out of a hotel, board a flight, or deal with Thai authorities. A shop holding your passport gains leverage over any return dispute — and dishonest operators use that leverage to inflate damage claims or refuse to return the document until you pay.

This is one of the most common Pattaya rental scams. It is also one of the easiest to avoid: say no, walk to the next shop, and rent where cash deposit is accepted. See normal deposit amounts and high deposit red flags.

Passport copy vs passport custody

A photocopy or phone photo of your passport bio page for the shop file is normal. Some counters scan it into their ledger. What is not normal is staff placing your passport in a drawer and saying you collect it on return. That custody removes your ability to fly, check out, or visit immigration on your schedule — leverage the scam guide documents at return.

If a shop refuses without your passport

Pattaya has dozens of scooter rental counters. If one shop will not rent without keeping your passport, leave. Do not negotiate under pressure at the counter with luggage in hand.

If a shop has already taken your passport and will not return it, treat it as an active dispute — not a normal rental return. The emergency scammed page lists immediate steps, including Tourist Police contact (1155).

Related questions

Can you rent a scooter in Pattaya without leaving your passport?
Yes. Fair shops in Pattaya rent scooters without keeping your physical passport. They accept a cash deposit — typically 2,000–5,000 baht for a basic scooter — and may take a passport copy for identity verification only. Your passport stays with you for the entire rental.
Is it normal for a scooter shop to ask for your passport?
A passport copy for identity is normal. Keeping your physical passport as collateral is not — it is a red flag and the basis of the passport-hostage scam. If a shop insists on holding your passport, walk away and find another counter.
What should you do if a shop refuses to rent without your passport?
Leave and rent elsewhere. Pattaya has many scooter shops, and several accept cash deposit plus passport copy only. Do not hand over your physical passport under pressure. If a shop already holds your passport and will not return it, see the emergency scammed guide.
Is a passport copy enough for scooter rental in Pattaya?
For many fair shops, yes — copy plus cash deposit is the standard pair. They verify age and identity; cash covers damage risk. Your physical passport stays in your hotel safe or on your person.
