Can you take a rental scooter to Koh Larn?

Koh Larn is one of Pattaya’s most common day trips — but the rental contract decides whether your bike can go on the ferry.

In short

Koh Larn is reachable by ferry from Bali Hai pier and many tourists take a rental scooter for the day. Many Pattaya contracts allow riding within Chonburi province, but some shops ban ferrying rental bikes or restrict riding outside agreed territory. Ask the shop in writing before you go — riding without permission can void the insurance.

The short answer

Often yes, but not automatically. Koh Larn sits in Chonburi province, and most Pattaya scooter rentals that allow provincial riding will permit the trip. Some shops explicitly ban putting the bike on a ferry, limit you to Pattaya city, or treat the island as outside the agreed area. The contract and a written confirmation from the shop are what matter — not what the counter staff say casually on pickup day.

Why Koh Larn trips catch renters out

Koh Larn is one of the most popular day trips from Pattaya. The route is straightforward: ride to Bali Hai pier, roll the scooter onto a ferry, explore the island’s beaches and hills, then ferry back before the shop’s return time. Tourists assume that because the island is close, any rental bike can go. That is not always true.

Many rental contracts restrict ferrying the vehicle, riding off agreed territory, or leaving the bike on an island overnight. A shop that discovers an unauthorised trip may treat any damage claim as fully your liability — even minor scratches that would normally sit within the insurance.

Riding a rental scooter outside the contract’s allowed area can void the insurance on the spot. If the shop has not confirmed Koh Larn in writing, you may be fully liable for damage, theft or a ferry incident. Read the territorial limits guide before you sign.

Ask the shop in writing

Before you ride to the pier, get a clear yes from the rental shop — on the contract, in a message, or as an emailed addendum. Ask specifically whether Koh Larn and the Bali Hai ferry are permitted, whether there is a ferry surcharge, and whether the bike must return the same day. A spoken “no problem” at the counter is worthless if the printed contract says otherwise.

Confirm with the ferry operator on the day as well. Most schedules accept scooters, but operators can refuse bikes, charge a separate fee, or limit space at peak hours. Build extra time into your return so a missed ferry does not make you late for shop closing.

Riding on Koh Larn itself

The island roads are steeper and rougher than central Pattaya. Hairpin bends, loose gravel and heavy tourist traffic make falls more likely than on flat city streets. The safe riding guide covers hill roads, braking on descents and what to watch for when you leave the main beach strips.

Wear a helmet, carry your licence or International Driving Permit, and treat the rental exactly as you would in Pattaya — checkpoints and traffic rules still apply on the island and on the ride to the pier.
